In-School Youth Clubs
Young girls in northern Malawi face numerous challenges in accessing quality education. Key issues include early or forced marriages, teenage pregnancies, parental neglect, gender-based violence, and harmful cultural norms. These factors significantly hinder girls from achieving their educational goals. To help keep girls in school and support them in reaching their educational milestones, EHAP implements various interventions aimed at addressing these challenges.
The approach
EHAP is proud to spearhead a transformative initiative aimed at keeping children in school and addressing the root causes of school dropouts in primary schools within its catchment area. To date, 21 vibrant youth clubs have been established, creating safe spaces for both girls and boys to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Each club is guided by a dedicated team consisting of a male and female school teacher, acting as patrons and matrons, and a member from the Mother Support Committee. These mentors serve as role models and provide support to the youth as they navigate challenges related to education and personal growth.
The youth clubs organize engaging activities, including sports games, dances, drama, poetry, and music. These creative outlets not only foster active participation but also instill confidence, teamwork, and resilience among the members. Beyond recreational activities, the clubs serve as platforms to combat School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) and reduce dropout rates, particularly among girls.
Recognising that many learners face barriers such as a lack of basic educational resources, EHAP with support from our donor partners, provides critical support, including school uniforms, books, and sports equipment like footballs and netballs. These resources ensure that orphaned and vulnerable learners can continue their education with dignity and hope.
The impact of these youth clubs extends far beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to voice their concerns through suggestion boxes or by approaching their matrons, patrons, or Mother Support Committee members. By fostering open communication, EHAP has created a robust support system that addresses issues early and effectively.
Moreover, the clubs work closely with community structures such as Child Protection Committees to identify and reintegrate children who have dropped out of school. To date, this initiative has successfully brought 215 children—both boys and girls—back to school. Many of these learners had left due to early marriages or teenage pregnancies, but with the intervention of the youth clubs and community support, they now have a second chance at education and a brighter future.
EHAP’s in-school youth club model demonstrates the profound impact of collaborative, community-driven approaches in promoting education and creating safe, inclusive environments for children to learn and grow. Together, we are building a future where every child can realize their potential.
