Commemoration of the Day of the African child at Mpherembe

The Day of the African Child was established in 1991 by African states under the Organization of African Unity to honor the memory of the children who were massacred in South Africa in 1976. These children bravely protested against the poor quality of education they received and demanded to be taught in their own languages. The DAC serves as a commemoration of their courageous actions and their fight for the right to quality education.

On 9th August 2024, EHAP participated in this year's Mzimba North Day of the African Child commemoration, which was held at Mpherembe Community Day Secondary School in Mpherembe. The event followed the usual national commemoration of the Day of the African Child on 16th June, celebrated at both the national and international levels.

This year’s theme was "Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now,". The theme provided an ideal opportunity to remind the community, policymakers, and NGO partners of the key challenges preventing African children from accessing quality education.

The guest of honor for this event was the Inkosi Mpherembe. Other organizations that attended and participated in this year's event were Plan Malawi International, CAMFED, SOS Children's Village, the District Child Protection Committee (DCPC), World Vision, and Red Cross, local leaders, and students from pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools across Mpherembe, to name a few.
